Muddy Intertidal ZoneHome > Photo Galleries > Muddy Intertidal Zone After our nature cruise, we visited the mud flat along the sand bar connecting the town of Bar Harbor to the neighboring island of Bar Island. This sand bar is how the town of Bar Harbor got its name, as the harbor is protected from severe weather by both Bar Island and the shallows of the sand bar. On the inner side of this bar is a long muddy intertidal zone. We noticed, however, that this are is becoming more sandy and less muddy over time. When we were here last in 2000, it was a markedly softer habitat then it is now. We also noticed that the small eel grass community that we observed last time had also disappeared. In any case, we spent a few smelly hours identifying a number of the species living here, including a variety of algae, annelids, gastropods, bivalves, and crustaceans.
