Pemetic is a quiet mountain, out of the way and not frequented by many,
which is why it is one of my favorite spots. The climb up took us along
the west side of Jordan Pond (which Pemetic Mt. borders), then up a gradually
increasing incline through northern hardwood forest, then mixed forest
and finally into a New England alpine forest. The trail follows a streambed
for part of the ascent, rising through two tight ravines (each no more
than a meter or two wide) that block out the sun and all sound but the
chuckle of the stream. Ladders made of saplings allow the hikers to climb
out of the ravines and continue along the trail to the summit. It is one
of my favorite segments of trail in the entire park. Our goal on this
mountain was to characterize and determine the species diversity of northern
hardwood and New England alpine forest communities from quadrats of each
habitat.
